SRC granted funding for the University of Turku

The Strategic Research Council (SRC) at the Academy of Finland granted funding for a consortia led by professor Susanna Paasonen from the University of Turku. This consortia focuses on ’Intimacy in Data-Driven Culture’ (IDA) and it belongs to Culture in an Increasingly Technologically Driven Society programme. IDA has six subproject of which two belong to the University of Turku: one led by Susanna Paasonen and other one by professor in software engineering and software security Ville Leppänen.

IDA critically examines datafication within the current digital economy, asking how it is experienced, made sense of, and resisted, and what socially sustainable solutions remain available. The consortium first analyses the impact of data-driven culture for people’s different social roles and relations, as well as the vulnerabilities that it gives rise to. Second, it inquires how intimacy functions as a contested resource in data-driven creative labour, public careers, and social connections. Third, IDA explores and develops democratic ways of managing, protecting, sharing, and using personal data.

SRC also granted funding for two other consortia where University of Turku is a partner. Assistant professor Mika Viljanen leeds the subproject of ’Ethical AI for the Governance of the Society’ and professor Hannu Ruonavaara leeds the subproject of ’Smart land use policy for sustainable urbanization’. Both of these consortia belong to the Changing Role of Public Authority and the Potential for Steering Society programme.
